Description: Eating on the machine/ at dialysis can be a controversial and challenging topic. This handout can help eliminate common issues associated with eating on the machine (spills, access issues, choking, large fluid intake etc), by highlighting ideal snacks as well as types of snacks to avoid. A variety of choose and avoid examples are provided. This handout can be used to help patients who are eating out after treatment, (which adds phosphorus, sodium and fluid), patients who feel uncomfortable/ bored/ hungry at treatment and may be more prone to skip treatments or cut treatments short. Space is also provided for the dietitian to make a specific plan with the patient.
