Potassium Possibilities Handout

Categories: ,

Description: This handout addresses the commonly overlooked fact that high potassium intake is NOT the only (or typical) cause of high serum potassium levels in those with CKD. This handout provides an evidence-based approach to improving potassium levels by looking at the root cause, such as constipation, poor acid base balance, lab error or high blood sugar or medications. Dietitians can refer to our other handouts on constipation, blood sugar management for education and interventions if needed. In the event that high potassium intake IS the issue for the patient, this handout provides clarity on portion sizes for common foods that can easily add up to be high potassium.
