Proteinmalnutrition: handout_poorappetite

Description:  This handout was designed based on the idea that kcal packing is a great concept, but this historically has meant adding more sugar, corn syrup or butter. Aside from being inflammatory, these options do not add nutrients, which is important for those who are also in need of kcal packing. With this tool, dietitians can share ways to add anti-inflammatory, nutrient dense foods in small amounts to foods people with poor appetites are generally willing to eat. This allows the patient to basically eat the same amount but have a significant calorie boost that isn’t limited to carbs or fat. Also included are tips for other options to add more calories or ides to help patients eat just a little bit more. This handout is ideal for older patients who have limited appetite or who forget to eat (this can be easily shared with family members to support patient intake at home), people dealing with chemotherapy, nausea, blood sugar management issues related to poor intake, or new dialysis patients with uremia induced poor appetite.
